Anne Rice: Christ is Lord: Out of Egypt

I finished reading Anne Rice’s Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt on Easter night.

The first book of a four part series, we see Jesus Christ at 7 years old as he learns of his true calling.

Naturally, a risk. Can you imagine how blasphemous it is to actually think you can write in the first person as Jesus Christ, the son of God?

Yet Anne Rice does a good job at it. The amount of scholarly and theological research she has put in is astounding and really reflects her careful and thoughtful reflection as a writer.

I believe in no uncertain terms that she may have been called to do this, that is write a book on who Jesus Christ is, on his feelings and his growth. Everything that she had worked on before was to prepare her to write this body of work.

I feel slightly smarter after reading through Anne Rice’s footnotes… perhaps I do not need a degree in theology after all. I could spend my time reading theological books for leisure. *wishful thinking*

I loved Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt because Anne Rice was able to draw from the stories of the Bible, discuss in detail what Jewish people did back in the day and fuse the essence of Christianity into her story. It helps us to understand what may have seemed abstract in the Bible.

It helps that Anne Rice has a Catholic background. I cannot imagine an evangelical charismatic writing with so much depth. Sorry to say.

Haven’t we ever as Christians wondered what it was like for Jesus Christ to walk these hallowed roads of earth? Haven’t we ever questioned God and say, “You don’t understand God! You don’t!”

Anne Rice suggests otherwise. She pays attention to the details and imagines what it might have been like. Did He know the will of the Father or did he grow into it? Did the Father reveal little by little? Did Jesus Christ have to learn like the rest of us?

I believe the Christ is Lord series is an inspired body of work because it makes us think, “Wow, maybe God does know what we are going through. If the son of God had to be born human to understand how miserable our lives, to understand the darkness that tries desperately to engulf us, then maybe God knows our trials, temptations and trappings and He’s provided a way out.” Maybe that is the idea.

Cannot wait to read the rest of the books in the series.

——-

On a lighter note, I’ve been back on Twitter and yeay me, I’ve been pacing myself really well. Not only that but I find it hard to squeeze a tweet out. Can you imagine? I wonder if all that will change soon enough.

Michael Jackson’s This Is It Movie Review

The first thing I saw this morning was this photo of a mini Michael Jackson impersonator. I thought it was such a great photo. This pose should be trademarked. It can only be Michael Jackson.

Little Michael Jackson impersonator 281009

Well today was an interesting day. Doors opened for me and to top it off, I watched Michael Jackson’s THIS IS IT.

Movie Poster

Movie Poster

I have to say that he is truly iconic, a musical genius and a fantastic entertainer. He embodies music and it permeates from his skin. He is music. His moves are irreplaceable, his flair and flamboyance will never be matched and his voice is incomparable.

Some highlights for me:- Smooth Criminal, Beat It, Billie Jean and I’ll Be There

I always thought when Mariah Carey covered Jackson 5’s I’ll Be There and ‘made it her own’, I really thought she had nailed it. What I realise tonight is that Mariah did nothing with and for the song. Sure she layered the song with timbre and her octave defying voice but when I heard Michael Jackson sing I’ll Be There in This Is It, it was ethereal. Michael’s soulful voice brought out the intensity and meaning of the lyrics to a whole new level. The acoustic yet very fresh and current touch really brought out Michael’s inner voice. It was heavenly to say the least.

When the introduction strains of Billie Jean were played, I let out an orgasmic sigh because it really melted my heart.

There were times when your head unconsciously bop to Michael’s music and his dancing is so different from his back-up dancers. They did the same moves but somehow, they were never quite as light as he was on his feet. He had an agility and he could make any part of his body dance, from his fingers to his torso. It was captivating to see his flexible body move in time to the rhythm. It was sexy.

There were glimpses of the back-up dancers and singers, stage hands and crew with their mouths open, spellbound and inspired by Michael Jackson. You could tell they were true fans of the art he created and represented. If I had been at rehearsals, I am sure I would have been the same.

Premiere Michael Jacksons This Is It LA

You could tell a lot of love was put into editing and making sure THIS IS IT the movie was an experience for the fans. It really was well done and hats off to Kenny Ortega and the crew for such an amazing show.

The audio mastering they did was impressive. I enjoyed the music very much. It was like they had recreated the old. It was old yet new. It was familiar yet refreshing. I suppose that is what makes live concerts so appealing.

The props were fantastic – they thought of everything from aerial artists to 3D to animation to make up & costume to pyrotechnics, Michael Jackson’s THIS IS IT would have been quite a show. And I realised too that only Michael Jackson can carry glittery jackets and pants without making them look tacky.

It was obvious though that Michael Jackson was too thin. He was really fragile and delicate looking compared to the other people on stage with him. I noticed he was wearing thermal underwear at times and then some times wearing a full on autumn jacket and layers. That made me kind of sad and you really couldn’t ignore the fact that he seemed grossly underweight. There were times when he would curve his body in a dance move and you would see the ridges of his ribs through his shirt. That made me sad.

Anyway, I hope the spirit of Michael Jackson lives on. The spirit to love and heal the world and to change the man in the mirror.

I’m Happy Beyonce Bailed

I’m not letdown that Beyonce bailed on Malaysia. I was intending to go though so don’t think that just because I’m a Mariah Carey fan, I’m all bitter and all. :)

I mean I like some of Beyonce’s songs. I don’t know many but I have always been awestruck by her live performances so I’m quite a fan. I find her managed well and the image that is projected has always been flawless. No hair out of place or anything. Her marriage was definitely handled respectfully and not tactlessly or tackily like Mariah Carey’s. :P I keep having to make snide comments at Mariah’s wedding. I can’t help it.

So why am I glad she postponed her concert? Because Malaysia does not deserve her. Look at how Malaysia is seen by the world. A ridiculous nation with a ‘holier than though’ attitude. How can Beyonce weaken the youth ‘mentally and morally’?! You blame bad upbringing on musical singers? That’s a tad bit shallow really.

Beyonce has been nothing but an upstanding and righteous artist. Sure she may dress scantily but her image has been nothing but humble and wholesome. You don’t see her trashing other artists. Proof was at the MTV Video Awards earlier this year when she graciously gave her award speech time to Taylor who got Kanye bashed. :P

I bet Malaysia would welcome Kanye West with open arms. I mean they allow Akon here. I mean they’ll probably allow heavy rock metal bands to come because they have no clue what they sing about.

So yeah, and now our events company blames Beyonce for the no show? Please, she shouldn’t even bother coming. First of all, she doesn’t need our money. Second of all, you ain’t gonna attract tourists by putting dress code restrictions on an artist known for her tassel barely there stage outfits. Wait, are you staging this concert to attract tourists in the first place or not? Beyonce just performed in Singapore for the F1 and it went without a hitch. In fact, tickets for that show were more expensive than the Malaysian ones yet people still paid to watch her.

I think Beyonce bailed ‘cos ticket sales were tragically low. I was at the ticket counter over the weekend and asked whether there were a lot more tickets left for Beyonce’s concert which was supposed to be in a week and they said ‘yes’… so your guess is as good as mine. This coupled with the crazy fanatical small town people who didn’t want her to come, why should she bother to perform when the country doesn’t appreciate her coming?

After the many times that Malaysia has gotten bad press in the gossip and entertainment sites, I think it is high time our country’s top people evaluated the situation seriously. First off, do you still want Malaysia to be dragged down by bad press? Is this how you intend to draw tourists? Through bad press? If you remember the ridiculousness of the Black Eyed Peas concert when Muslims were at first banned and then allowed to attend? Why so wishy-washy?

What the Malaysian government needs to do is ban all international entertainment acts from coming to Malaysia. That would save us from narrow-minded people politicking and picketing over an artist when there are so many other more important things to be preoccupied with.

This will be a good move because Malaysia will save face for one. We’ve been battered by the gossip and entertainment news sites. Mind you, these are some of the most read websites on the internet and Malaysia is seen as a small country run by freaks. If Indonesia could host Beyonce two years ago, and remember they are the biggest Muslim nation in the world, then who does Malaysia think they are?! If that ain’t a slap in our face then I don’t know what is. We’re too numb and dumb to see it.

Another reason why it is good that Beyonce bailed is because it saves Islam some dignity. I’m sorry but the people who are meant to lead the Muslims are not doing a good job at all in presenting their case. If they said they were going to ban the Muslims then they should have stuck to it rather than reverse the ban a week later. It makes Islam look like it’s led by a bunch of namby-pambies. It makes Muslims uncertain of what Allah wants. Don’t they seek him for wisdom before going to the newspapers? I am not a Muslim but really, it makes them and the religion look foolish when they do these kind of things. Be strong about it and don’t let politics get in the way. I think our religious leaders are too preoccupied with sex. Are they not getting enough of it or something?

Why do the adults of Malaysia not trust their youth to tell from right or wrong or to know moral from immoral? If you have taught them the right virtues at home and at schools, they will be model and upstanding citizens. However, if you continue to stifle the society what you get are the top stories found in The Star. Please head on over to The Star Online for your daily dose of scandalous smut (just check out the ‘Most Read’ stories of the day). The best part is you get to use your imagination ‘cos most of it is implied anyway.

So really, please just ban foreign acts from coming to Malaysia. It saves Malaysians a lot of heartache. And I think for some of us, we would rather see our favourite artists perform in their natural state and that is, Beyonce in her scanty stage clothes, shaking her booty and what not. So we would pay more to see her perform elsewhere without restrictions. Perhaps event companies and sponsors can look into sending winners and fans over to the other countries where the foreign acts will be performing. They do it with the musicals in Singapore so why not with musical acts?

And maybe in the time being we can work on our society. To make it more tolerant of other cultures, to be more open and moderate and not be afraid of what the world has to offer. If we are kept under a bowl, we will never be able to progress. And maybe that is the point, eh?

My life in 4 squares

my-life-in-4-squares

I found this many moons ago and I remember thinking how this really describes my life in a nutshell. It’s kind of … sad.

I had intended to sleep at a decent hour last night but ended up sleeping at the crack of dawn. I had some spurt of inspiration at 2am in the morning which kind of sucks ‘cos that happened twice this week.

The good news of course is that I was elated and on cloud nine for most of yesterday because aside from getting decent sleep the night before, Lindsay Lohan’s FoD eHarmony dating spoof ad really did make grand waves on the internet. So far 2,372,537 views and it’s been on the internet less than 3 days.

Anyway, let’s hope my inspiration does not go to waste and I actually find some way to tell people about it. :)

Loving the dramatic eyes and make-up! When I first spotted these pictures, I literally fell out of my seat. Vanessa Hudgens is looking hot!

Are neutral skin toned colours in this season?

By the way, Vanessa Hudgens is also on the cover of Self Magazine where she reveals 25 things we don’t know about her. I’d love to read that!

American Idol Top 13 Official Studio Shots

Something for you and me to water our mouths to, here are the official photos for the Top 13 of American Idol. Do you think they’ll do a photoshoot every week?

american-idol-top-13-official-500x293

As much as I would like to live blog, I live in a far away land so that’s virtually impossible. I will keep my recap short and sweet though – Adam Lambert made Black or White sound REALLY good. I was flabbergasted by his performance. Danny Gokey has a really cheerful face. It’s open, happy… I like him very much. His singing is also really good. Megan Joy was kinda quirky in a good way with Rockin’ Robin. She’s really pretty – especially in her high school photos!! I liked the visually impaired Scott MacIntyre even if his some times googly eyes kind of freak me out but then I think of Andrea Bocelli and then all’s good… Anoop and Jorge have got to get out. Fast. Not that I’m discriminatory in any way… I just found their performances really bad. And Anoop probably got in ‘cos of the whole Slumdog Millionaire hype. The rest were all good but forgettable… Kris wasn’t forgettable. He reminded me of Jesse McCartney and of the Beatles with his guitar and the way he moved. Eww to the one channeling Justin Timberlake. It’s my first time watching all of them by the way. I saved myself for the Top 13. :)

Lindsay Lohan is Stylishly Almost Nude!

Black and White photography arrests my attention a lot of the time. Something about the shadows and the shades of gray that just beg for a second, third or fourth glance. Too bad I can’t say the same for film noir… and why not? That is the question…

lindsay-lohan-hedi-slimane-2

lindsay-lohan-hedi-slimane-5-chic

There is something about Lindsay Lohan that is attractive and alluring. These photos by Hedi Slimane accentuate her best parts. I’ve only stared at this set for a week, loving how the focus is on one item – like her jewellery (Cartier bracelet) or her “Bella Vita” tattoo or her ’star’ tattoo or her mole on her upper lip. The simplicity of these shots are breathtaking.

lindsay-lohan-hedi-slimane-4-black-and-white

lindsay-lohan-hedi-slimane-3-topless

I love it that she’s topless too… not in a “let’s bare all” way like her Marilyn Monroe photo shoot but in an artistic way. Although her hair was a bit unruly, it was probably the intention of the photographer. I love how the light catches the different shades of her hair even. Just fantastic.

lindsay-lohan-hedi-slimane-1

It might seem like there was a nipple slip in one of the shots, I personally thought that such a thing could not have happened and maybe she has a wart on her breast that we were unaware of but it seems to be Hedi’s ‘thang’ to reveal one nipple. If you look at his other clients / subjects, you will see that is the case… see how he has a minimalistic approach that begs for you to focus on that one thing?

To view the rest of this glorious set, head on over to:-

In some of these shots her physique almost seems masculine what with her ‘pelvic v’. Although I would like to see more flesh on her, she still looks gorgeous nonetheless!

Kate Winslet Wins 2 at 66th Golden Globes

Last night, they were showing Titanic on television and my cousins and I huddled around the tv set and watched it from beginning to end.

It’s really an epic tragedy. I couldn’t contain myself in the last hour of the film. Probably when the quartet on-board started playing “Nearer My God to Thee”.

The score is just superb – Titanic: Music from the Motion Picture (1997) – It really is. It carried the film so well at the end. Without it, I’m sure the impact wouldn’t have been as great.

I was in love with Kate Winslet’s bright red hair in Titanic.

So was I thrilled this morning to see that Kate Winslet won not 1 but 2 GGs (Golden Globes) for Best Supporting Actress (The Reader) and Best Actress (Revolutionary Road) !!

She brought old school glam back into business at the 66th Golden Globes with her Yves Saint Laurent strapless black classy gown that accentuated her skin tone and hair colour of the day. It was simple but stunningly elegant.

All in all, a great return for the Golden Globes!

And I actually liked Drew Barrymore’s hair… and I too thought Amy Adams looked a stunner with her Oscar de la Renta . I have a thing for redheads.

Congratulations to all the winners!
